VDLI

DeMille’s groundbreaking Vietnamese–English Dual Language Immersion program—the first of its kind in California—nurtures biliteracy, cultural pride, and academic excellence, empowering students to thrive in two languages from prekindergarten to 5th Grad.

Vietnamese Dual Language Immersion
Our WSD Vietnamese Dual Language Immersion Program integrates native English speaking, Vietnamese speaking, and English language learning students in the same classroom from K-8th grades. Academic instruction is provided through two languages, typically with two teachers. We adhere to a 50:50 instruction model, where students will spend 50% of their day learning content in English and 50% of their day learning content in Vietnamese. Aside from language arts taught in both languages, math, science, social studies, visual and performing arts also alternate so students receive instruction in English and Vietnamese.
Students in the VDLI program continue learning in middle and high school, where they receive support to keep building their language skills. Our program is built on three core pillars, with a strong focus on preparing students for college and future careers.

Bilingualism
Biliteracy
Students develop high levels of language proficiency in both program languages.

Academic
Achievement
Students demonstrate high levels of academic achievement in two languages.

Sociocultural
Competence
Students develop an appreciation for and an understanding of diverse cultures.
