Homeroom Parent
Homeroom parents serve as a go-between connecting parents -- including parent-teacher organizations -- and the teacher. They also typically organize classroom parties, set up social events with parents and support teachers.
Why:
Homeroom parents play an integral part in the communication between teachers and parents
throughout the school year.
Who and What:
Parents of DeMille students wanting to get more involved in their child's schooling may
volunteer to become homeroom parents. A homeroom parent facilitates communication
between parents and the teacher, school administration, and PTA and supports the teacher in
needs that may arise.
When:
Homeroom parents would volunteer and serve each class and their teachers for the length of
the academic year.
How:
The responsibilities of a homeroom parent vary from teacher to teacher and grade to grade. If
you are considering becoming a class parent, these are some things a room parent may do:
● Meet with the teacher to discuss the role they would like the room parent to play.
● Collect the names and phone numbers of all the parents in the class.
● Attend and organize activities as planned with the teacher.
● Assist in communicating class events to parents via WhatsApp.
● Maintain a positive working relationship with the teacher.
● Assist the teacher in the classroom and with material preparation.
● Recruit other parents to help in the general duties.
● Meet with other room parents and the school's room parent organizer monthly.
● Attend the PTA meetings at DeMille Elementary.
● Organize class parties and enrichment opportunities. This may include planning,
shopping for, and hosting the event.
● Call or email parents to obtain donations of supplies for the classroom and events.
● Call or email parents to line up chaperones for field trips.
● Find volunteers to help in the classroom, if needed.
● Send out reminders—via email, phone, or notes that go home with the kids—about
upcoming events, meetings, field trips, fundraising, and needs for donations or
volunteers.
● Act as a resource by answering questions for parents new to the school or class.
Homeroom parenting is an excellent opportunity for parents and guardians who want to be
involved but don't want to get pulled into major school-wide activities, which can be
overwhelming for some. Each teacher may have one homeroom parent. All homeroom parents
will take on the responsibility of representing the PTA.
