About the event
We are so excited to share that we will be recognizing Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) at DeMille this year on October 31st since the holiday is over the weekend!
Many people misunderstand and think that Dia de los Muertos is a "spooky" or "scary" holiday. It is not. Día de los Muertos is a beautiful cultural tradition celebrated in Mexico and around the world to honor and remember loved ones who have passed away. Far from being a sad occasion, it is a joyful time filled with color, music, food, and love — a way to celebrate the lives of those who came before us and keep their memory alive. we encourage all who would like to participate in one way or another to do so. Your student can bring a copy of a picture (not the original) or momento (please nothing valuable) or if they would like, they may dress up. This particular cultural celebration allows for makeup and so for this day only, students will be permitted to wear makeup if they would like. Please remember that there is no blood or gore and this is a cultural celebration not a Halloween costume activity.
One of the most meaningful parts of this celebration is the ofrenda (altar). Each grade level created its own ofrenda — thoughtfully decorated with photos, candles, flowers (especially marigolds), food, and meaningful items that represent loved ones and the cycle of life. These ofrendas will be displayed on campus Friday only, for everyone to appreciate and learn from.
As part of our celebration, students will participate in an engaging activity where they will learn about different aspects of this worldwide tradition, highlighting connections between cultures and the importance of remembrance in communities around the world.
